What We Want

• ​Speculative fiction (horror, sci-fi, fantasy) with heart. We enjoy the weird shit that slips through the cracks. We’re looking for the stories that you believe in that don’t fit anywhere else. The stories that are too speculative, not speculative enough, or somewhere in between. Don’t self-reject!

• Up to 5,000 words. Flash fiction is okay.

• One story at a time. If we respond to you before the window has closed, feel free to submit another story.

• Simultaneous submissions (submitting to us and another market) are okay. Just email us to let us know that you’ve been accepted elsewhere. Congrats!

• Reprints are allowed. Make sure you’re outside your exclusivity date!

• Please submit your story in modern manuscript format (or as close to it as possible).

What We Don't Want

• Don’t send short stories that are longer than 5,000 words.

• Don’t send short stories that are misogynistic, racist, fatphobic, homophobic, ableist, or harmful to a marginalized group.

• Don’t send stories that rely on harmful stereotypes. Sarah Jackson has a great list of stereotypes to avoid in your stories, if you’d like some guidance.  

• Don’t send porn or erotica. A sex scene is okay, but it should have a purpose.

• Don’t send us stories that are written with generative AI. Just no. (Grammarly and Spell Check are allowed.)

How to Submit

• ​Currently, we are not open to submissions. When we are open to submissions, a button will appear below for you to submit.

• Please submit your less than 5,000-word story in doc or docx format. If neither of these formats is possible, you can submit a pdf. If your story is accepted, we will ask for an editable version of the document.

• In your cover letter include:

  • Your name

  • Your story title

  • Your story word count

  • Content warnings, if applicable (for a list of possible content warnings, see this trigger warning database)

  •  If this story is a reprint, where and when the story was published

  • If there’s anything you’d like us to know about your identity, let us know.

  • If you have not been published before, please let us know. We’d love to publish a first-time author!

  • If you are an expert on your story in some way (like you’re an astrophysicist and you’re writing about galaxies, or you’re a teacher writing about teaching), please let us know.

• Do not summarize your story in the cover letter.

• If you have not heard from us in 3 months, please query us at our email.

The Legal Stuff

• We ask for a 6-month exclusivity (you can send stories to other markets as a reprint after this), with an exception for a Best Of collection.

• We will be publishing the story in audiobook format as well as in print.
